MG Park Malinas leads with one of Belgium’s largest solar roofs

MG Real Estate, in collaboration with its renewable energy arm 6AM, has completed the installation of one of the largest photovoltaic rooftop installations in Belgium at MG Park Malinas in Mechelen. Developed on behalf of food manufacturer Kellanova and its logistics partner GXO, this landmark project marks a significant milestone in the integration of sustainability and logistics infrastructure.

Covering more than 63,000 sqm, the rooftop installation consists of 14,760 solar panels with a total capacity of 9.41 MWp. The system is expected to produce approximately 8.5 GWh of renewable electricity per year. The green energy generated will be used directly on site through a dedicated connection to the adjacent Kellanova Pringles production facility and its distribution centre at MG Park Malinas.

The solar installation is estimated to offset more than 2,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, the equivalent of the carbon captured by approximately 95,000 trees, and will supply clean electricity to meet the annual consumption of around 2,400 Belgian households. “The integration of this scale of renewable energy into an industrial site demonstrates our dedication to climate action and energy independence,” said Jaime Mata, Project Manager of 6AM. “We are proud to contribute to Kellanova’s operations and to support MG Real Estate’s long-term vision of combining high-performance infrastructure with real environmental impact.”

Built on the former Axalta brownfield site, MG Park Malinas is a strong example of how redevelopment can bring new life to industrial land through cutting-edge, environmentally conscious design. The park is on track to receive BREEAM “Excellent” certification in recognition of its broader sustainability profile.
