MG Real Estate continues to grow in the Nordics

02/05/2023

Logistics player Westerman Multimodal Logistics has moved last year into a unique 18,000-square-metre rail-bound building in the port of Malmö. It is the only one of its kind in southern Sweden where train wagons directly enter the warehouse. MG Real Estate was in charge of the development and starts today with the construction of a similar building.

MG Real Estate has completed the first of two rail-related buildings in Malmö, Sweden. This marks a first as the building is the only one of its kind in southern Sweden.

Today the first column was placed for an extention to the building for Westerman Multimodal Logistics.

Direct rail infrastructure

The building is connected to the Swedish railway infrastructure, allowing wagons to enter the premises directly and afterwards complete their journey to customers via the rail network. This solution allows Westerman to accommodate wagon handling, storage and cross-docking in one building. MG Real Estate notices that the demand for this kind of total solution is increasing.

" We are specialists in these kinds of solutions and we notice an increasing interest in building flexibly for different modes of transport. Our plan is to grow further and find more strategic locations in Sweden. Malmö certainly lends itself to such projects thanks to enough land for expansion."

Optimal use of several modes of transport

A total of six wagons can be accommodated at a time, and an additional rail track will allow an additional six wagons to wait outside. The terminal will be used for wagon handling, cross-docking and warehousing. It mainly involves importing and exporting anything from heavier steel to food and paper products. Thanks to its waterfront location, goods that are not transported by train can be transported towards mainland Europe via ships.

"By using different modes of transport (road, rail and water), our goal is to provide the most optimal and environmentally friendly logistics solution to our clients. In our new state-of-the-art multimodal terminal at the Port of Malmö, we take care of import and export volumes. With the possibilities in Malmö, we are taking important steps to develop innovative logistics concepts together with our customers at a strategic location. In this way, Westerman is building a sustainable future!"

Lambert van Dieren, CEO Westerman Multimodal Logistics

Extra terminal

Today, MG Real Estate and Westerman have placed the first column of the additional warehouse in MG Park Malmö. The second building will cover 18,000 square metres and will be ready in 2024.
